Title: Symmetry and Asymmetry in Clonial Warfare ca. 1500-2000. The Uses of a Concept.
Author: Dierk Walter
Pages: 26

The Uses of a Concept

Why should we study colonial wars, and why specifically the usage of asymmetric warfare in colonial wars? Dierk Walter argues that the study of asymmetric colonial warfare will help us understand some of the present developments of warfare. He also convincingly argues that symmetric Clausewitzian warfare really is the exception in history, and that the asymmetric warfare is the normal.

Dr. phil Dierk Walter has studied history and political science at the universities of Augsburg (Germany) and Bern (Switzerland). His doctoral thesis (2001) on Prussian Army Reforms, 1807-1870, was published in 2003. He is currently a researcher at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research and is working on a book on the changing images of future war in the United Kingdom, 1945-71.
